Volterra

One of my favorite days in Italy was when we went to the Medieval Fair in Volterra. Every year the town transforms into a medieval town. The food, dress, activities, and currency were similar to the medieval days. Not only that but it was a really old, medieval looking town so it felt like being transported back several hundred years.

Harrison makes a very pretty lady.

Of course, once the boys discovered the crossbows, we had to try it out.

Tuscany Day 2: Saint Galgano Abbey

In the 10th century a knight decided to become a hermit and to prove his devotion he thrust his sword in a sword (expecting it to break), but instead it penetrated the stone to the hilt. It is said that the sword in the stone from the King Arthur legend is based on it. Our second day in Tuscany we took a short drive to see the abbey and the sword in the stone.

On our drive to the abbey we stopped for some pictures.

We saw field and fields of sunflowers. Too bad we were a couple of weeks late so they were dying by the time we saw them.

My favorite part of Tuscany was driving around and seeing beautiful scenery wherever we went.

Tuscany

My favorite region in Italy is Tuscany. One of the highlights of our trip was the rustic Tuscan villa we stayed in. It was up a narrow dirt road that was a bit scary at times (especially in the rain), but it was secluded and had a beautiful view that made the drive worth it. I loved it there and was sad to leave after a week.
